Anchorage CARS Integration

Castle Rock is working in Alaska to integrate CARS (Condition Acquisition and Reporting System) with the Municipality of Anchorage. By expanding the geographic coverage of CARS to the municipal level within Anchorage Castle Rock will accomplish the following:

- Allow for construction situation entry on all major streets in Anchorage;

- Support the oversize / overweight permit staff by issuing trucking permits in real-time. This will also allow commercial carriers to eventually request and purchase oversize/overweight permits on-line;

- Provide more specific details to 511 callers requesting traveler information in the Anchorage area. In Minneapolis, Minnesota, details such as exit numbers and cross streets are available. These will be implemented in Anchorage

- Position CARS to eventually interface with Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) in the Anchorage area, allowing only a single point of entry required to push information to 511, web pages, and DMS.

- Position Alaska CARS to operate either Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) or Low Power FM (LPFM) broadcasts in and around Anchorage, should Alaska wish to deploy them after they are piloted in other CARS states.

- Allow for a series of landmark areas around Anchorage to be configured within CARS (such as Anchorage Airport, the Anchorage Marina area, Downtown) in order to describe situations to cover areas that are easily understood by residents and tourists, particularly in the event of emergencies or disasters.
